Birmingham All Girls Social Group
Age Group: Mature (to handle topics being discussed) - 21 years old
Time: 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Location: ARC of Shelby County
This group is designed to explore issues that just girls will face as they mature. Topics will include need for girlfriends, in-depth conversation skills, sexuality, flirting, dating, self-reliance and advocacy, building self worth, transitional living, appropriate social networking, birth control, reading body language of others, using body language as signals to others, and more. Many of our female clients can be naive, including the message they are sending to others and interpreting intentions of others. We will explore these issues in a 12-week class. Lessons will utilize popular movie clips for discussion, primarily for reading body language and interpreting intentions. There will be a lot of stopping and starting of movie clips as well as discussion and lessons on the topics outlined above. Please communicate any concerns with movie content that might be shown in advance with Kerry Mataya.
Parents will be informed of movies and topics discussed for debriefing at home after the session. Issues can be discussed with parents if child is under 17 years old or younger; however, will do so in meeting format for open discussion with child. Personal discussions of participants 18 years and older will not be discussed with parents unless participant has signed a release giving permission. This group will be lead by Kerry Mataya, M.S.Ed.

Birmingham Social Group (8th - 11th Grade)
Age Group: 8th - 11th Grade
Time: 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Location: Homewood Church of Christ, Homewood AL
This group will be focused on more "in depth" topics and more advanced skill development. This class is only for students who are ready to make more advanced steps in their social and organizational development. The majority of the sessions will be lesson based, so students need to come prepared with questions and a good attitude toward skill development. Skills will include maintaining a lengthy conversation, getting to know someone well, motivation to maintain relationships, motivation to plan ahead, and setting goals for the future and making steps to get there. Students will have several opportunities throughout the course of the year to plan a group project. This will be a lot more detailed than planning where they will eat the following week, although that was hard for many to remember to initiate. Parents will receive more detailed information about the project once the assignment is given.
Monthly Tuition for September: $60/Month
